The Apostle Mark begins his epistle in
Mark 1:1&2 with “The beginning of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ, the son of God.
As it is written in the Prophets:” NKJV.
The NIV version it reads as Good News.
Either translation is extraordinary.
It is the culmination of the promise of
salvation made all the way back in
Genesis. There is a lot of history in this statement
made by Mark during the Roman times. During that
time Rome was spreading its empire by military
conquest. When a Roman General was victorious in a
campaign, he would send a herald back to Rome to
declare that he has conquered, he was victorious.
This was good news for the empire.
Mark borrowed this same method to declare the Good
News of Jesus’s coming. This is the long-awaited
message of salvation for fallen mankind. Mark stated
God has Delivered! He has delivered us from our sins,
no matter what they are, from drugs, from pornography,
whatever our situations are or has been. He has
delivered us from illnesses, even cancer, ultimately. He
has delivered. Nothing is bigger than what He has done.
We have no sin or situation that is greater than God.
Mark is declaring the Good News, the beginning of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, God, as a man, has
come to redeem His children. Each one of us have the
opportunity to claim His redemption. Mark wrote in
verse 4, “John came baptizing in the wilderness and
preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of
sins.” Repentance in the Greek is translated as a change
of mind, a change of direction. I was walking in this way,
changed my mind and changed my direction.
Repentance is not just being sorry for my actions but
changing them. Repentance is our change of behavior
because of the change of our attitude.
God wants each one of us to claim the Gospel, the
Good News of Jesus Christ, the glorious redemption
God has delivered.
