Happy Sabbath, Church Family!
Few biblical subjects have produced as much fear, confusion, and misunderstanding as hell. Many people have been taught that God keeps the lost alive throughout eternity so they can experience unending conscious torment. For some, this teaching has become a reason to fear God. For others, it has become the reason they cannot believe in Him at all.
The question is both theological and deeply personal: Would a loving God burn people forever?
We should not answer that question by removing God ’s justice from the Bible. Scripture clearly teaches that sin has consequences, a final judgment is coming, and evil will not continue forever. God takes human choices seriously, and there will ultimately be a separation between those who accept His salvation and those who persistently reject it.
However, we must also ask whether the traditional picture of everlasting conscious torment accurately represents what Scripture teaches. Does the Bible say the lost will live forever in flames, or does it say they will finally perish? Is the punishment an eternal process that never ends, or an irreversible judgment whose results will last forever?
The Bible declares that “the wages of sin is death, ” not eternal life in suffering. Jesus said that God gave His Son so that whoever believes in Him “should not perish but have everlasting life. ” According to that familiar promise, everlasting life belongs to those who receive Christ. The alternative is not everlasting life in another location —it is perishing.
This Sabbath, we will examine passages about the lake of fire, “eternal fire, ” “everlasting punishment, ” the smoke that rises forever, and the story of the rich man and Lazarus. We will allow Scripture to explain Scripture as we seek to understand both God ’s justice and His character.
The final destruction of sin is not an act of cruelty from an angry God. It is God ’s decisive act to end rebellion, suffering, violence, disease, and death forever. The fire of judgment does not preserve evil throughout eternity; it removes evil so God can create a world in which pain will never return.
God does not delight in anyone ’s destruction. Through Jesus Christ, He has done everything love can do to save us without taking away our freedom to choose.
I invite you to come with your questions, bring your Bible, and listen with an open heart. We are not asking what tradition says or what fear imagines. Together, we will ask: What does the Bible really say?
